Minnesota window tint law the legal limits, explained

Minnesota measures tint by VLT — the percentage of light the window lets through. Higher is lighter; lower is darker.

Sedans: front side, back side and rear windows must all let in more than 50% light.
SUVs, vans & trucks: front side windows must let in more than 50% light; back side and rear windows can be any darkness.
Windshield: only a non-reflective strip along the top, above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.
Reflectivity: no window may be more than 20% reflective.
Color: red and amber tints are not permitted.
Medical exemption: darker tint is allowed with a physician's certification.
